The High Five

The High Five

Welcome to the High Five: The week’s hottest news, sure to make you sound sharp at any gathering.

Hot Dish: For Cake’s Sake

Chocolate is a Valentine’s Day staple (it’s shown to release endorphins and serotonin, making any romantic evening that much sweeter). There’s no better place in town to grab a slice than Dos Urban Cantina (2829 W. Armitage). Named “Best Piece of Chocolate Cake” by Chicago Magazine in 2016, the super moist, fudge-frosted confection is the ultimate decadent V-Day dessert.

From the Press: Turning the Tide

With the viral trend of eating Tide pods (ugh), the detergent brand has had to work some PR magic to change the conversation. They certainly succeeded on Super Bowl Sunday, with five spots (big game ad spots run at about $5 million a pop) throughout the game and earned a whopping 110 million views. Check out our favorite, where Tide collabs with another P&G brand.

Ready, Set, ChicaGO: Love, Actually?

90 minutes of Tinder troubles, first date fiascos and long-lost lust … introducing Second City’s Valentine-themed show, Hooking Up: Second Base. If you loathe the cliché chocolates and flowers on Valentine’s Day, take that special someone to experience Second City’s take on modern dating, romance and relationships. Tuesday and Wednesday until March 7.

La Vida Local: New Kids on the Block

After the sudden demise of hyperlocal news source DNAInfo, three of its former journalists have banded together to form Block Club. They’ll churn out neighborhood news, asking readers to subscribe for a fee. And for all you bitcoin hoarders out there, Block Club will accept payment in cryptocurrencies along with traditional payments. The new editors are hoping this bitcoin buzz along with their status as a nonprofit will help them become a permanent news fixture.
